Carols by Candlelight

'Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the new born king'

As the choir walked in, each holding a single candle singing at the top of their voices, I once again had to pinch myself.

My first Jesus College carol service is something I will always remember.

It felt like we had returned to the historic Oxford of bygone years, for in the chapel there was no electric light, the room was lit up by candles alone, creating the most beautiful atmosphere.

The college chaplain gave a Christmas sermon and welcomed everyone, of all faiths to the service. We were then all invited to join the choir in singing the carols.

Families were invited to the service and as the choir sang their last song, my mum had tears in her eyes.

'It's just magical,' she said, looking around the room.

It was in that moment that I felt so intensely proud that I'd made it here, for these sorts of experiences were ones so special to Oxford.

Glossary

Chaplain - colleges chapels have their own chaplains who hold services throughout the term and often act as part of the colleges welfare team.
