Grease, New Theatre Oxford

By Eva (@the_psycholinguist)

I recently had the honour of being invited to the Grease press night at New Theatre Oxford. As a new @thatoxfordgirl Ambassador, this was my first ever event and I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I arrived at the theatre, people at the entrance kindly directed me to the piano bar downstairs, where I was able to sit and enjoy some drinks before the show in a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.

The most successful movie musical came back and I was so excited to watch it. The original production of Grease premiered at the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago in 1971. In 1972, Grease officially opened on Broadway at the Broadhurst, while six years after Grease made its New York debut, the film adaptation was released in 1978. The first Broadway revival of Grease opened in 1994, while the recent revival in 2007 went through a unique process to choose its leads. This world-loved musical has also had international productions all around the world!

And if despite all the different ways and times in which you could have enjoyed Grease, you still haven’t had a chance to see it, let me tell you why it’s worth seeing. The musical tells the story of leather-clad greaser Danny and girl-next-door Sandy who are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High for senior year. Throughout the show, you experience the friendships, romances and adventures of a group of high school kids in the 1950s. Get ready to laugh, sing and dance!

There were so many songs that made me delve into the musical world of Grease: ‘’Grease’’, ‘’You’re the one that I want’’ and my personal favourite, ‘’Hopelessly devoted to you’’ which gave me goosebumps - a phenomenal performance by the cast.

Overall, the musical was absolutely fantastic! The cast performed exceptionally well and left me awestruck by their multi-talented abilities. I enjoyed every second of it and I didn’t want it to end. By the end, everyone in the audience was dancing and singing along to the songs even after leaving the theatre, letting the delight continue into the night.

This show is a must-see for all musical fans, but also those who have never seen a musical before. Watch Grease to get immersed in the world of music.
