The Bodyguard, New Theatre Oxford

By Carys Hogan

Whitney Houston is an iconic name. So much so, that it is hard to do her work justice.

One of the things synonymous with Whitney is The Bodyguard - a much-loved musical and film in which Whitney starred. The Bodyguard features some of her hits, including irresistible classics like “I Have Nothing”, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Despite being now over 30 years old, contemporary audiences have the opportunity to witness the classic production for themselves on the current UK and Ireland tour. The storyline follows superstar Rachel Marron, who is receiving ominous messages from a stalker. Her team decide to hire her a former Secret Service agent, turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer. Their personalities initially clash, with both wanting to have their own way and be in charge. Unsurprisingly perhaps, what they don’t expect is to fall in love - but this comes with complexities of its own.

Multi-platinum Australian recording artist, Emily Williams, is sure to blow audiences away with her voice. Her voice and acting is nothing short of powerful and she brings a new life to Whitney Houston’s timeless classics. Emily-Mae, who plays Nicki, is equally talented, with a beautiful voice and an extraordinary way of bringing you into the character, allowing you to truly feel for the overshadowed sibling. And of course, the leading man- Ayden Callaghan as Frank Farmer. He brings a certain presence to the stage that never makes you doubt for a second that he is THE bodyguard. It's equally heart-warming to see his interactions with young Fletcher, who deserves an honourable mention for being pure joy on stage.

Michaelmas Term is always tough - but The Bodyguard is not one to miss. You’ll be a fool to miss this “One Moment in Time”. Catch on tour across the UK!
